Weather in Bosnia and Herzegovina changes with the seasons and depends on where you are. Valleys and Herzegovina are warm, mountains are cooler, and winters bring snow. Knowing what to expect helps you plan your trip and pack properly.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is mild and green. Daytime temperatures reach 15–22°C in valleys and 10–18°C in mountains. Rivers are full from snow melt, which makes May the best month for rafting. Camps start to open in April, though mountain sites may open later. Rain showers are common, so bring waterproofs.
Summer (June to August)
Summer is hot in Herzegovina, with 30°C or more in July and August. Lakes and rivers are perfect for swimming. Mountains stay cooler, with 20–25°C during the day and fresh nights. This is peak season for camps, especially by rivers and lakes. Book early for July and August.
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is cooler and calmer. September is still warm, around 22–25°C in valleys. October drops to 15–18°C, with cooler nights. Colours in forests are striking, and camps are quieter. Rain increases in October and November. Many camps close by mid autumn, though cabins and chalets remain available.
Winter (December to February)
Winter brings snow in mountains. Ski resorts such as Bjelašnica, Jahorina, and Vlašić see temperatures below freezing, while Sarajevo averages 0–5°C. Herzegovina stays milder, often 8–12°C in January. Most outdoor pitches close, but all-season camps and mountain chalets stay open.
Regional differences
Herzegovina
Hot and sunny in summer, mild in winter. Camps near Mostar and Trebinje stay open longer into the year.
Central Bosnia
Moderate climate with cooler nights. Rain is spread across the year.
Una and Drina valleys
Warm summers, cool evenings, wetter springs. Rivers are strongest in May and June.
Mountains (Vlašić, Bjelašnica, Maglić)
Cooler even in summer. Nights often fall below 10°C. Snow from December to March.
Tips for campers
Always pack warm layers, even in summer, for mountain nights.
In Herzegovina, bring sun protection and water shoes for rivers.
Spring and autumn are best for fewer crowds, but check which camps are open.
Winter camping means choosing cabins, chalets, or all-season sites with heating.
